JD.com Inc. Adr, also recognized as Jingdong and formerly called 360buy, is a Chinese e-commerce business headquartered in Beijing. It is one of the two biggest B2C online retailers in China, the other being Alibaba. JD is a member of the Fortune Global 500 and its securities are often traded under the stock code “JD.”
The name JD is a nod to the combination of the first names of founder Liu Qiangdong and his wife, which together form the word "Jingdong." JD.com was founded in 2004 focusing primarily on electronics and home appliances. The business model of JD entailed buying the goods from manufacturers, storing them in warehouses, and then delivering them to the consumers, which was a different approach from other online retailers at that time.
JD.com is widely recognized for its exceptionally fast delivery system. The company has built an extensive logistics network covering the entirety of China. JD relies on automation, robotics, and drones to speed up the delivery process and operates nearly 1,000 warehouses with a combined floor area of over 21 million square meters.
The company's innovative approach extends to services beyond online retailing. JD.com has branched out into various areas such as offering financial services, marketing solutions, supply chain, and cloud services. Its platform also allows other sellers to market products to its vast customer base.
In 2014, JD.com was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange. Its IPO constituted one of the largest tech companies listings that year, raising $1.78 billion dollars. Over the years, JD has expanded not only in terms of services but also geographically, reaching markets outside China, like Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
JD.com's business performance has grown impressively over the years. For instance, during the November 11 "Singles' Day" promotions, it reported over $19 billion in sales in 2017 and over $23 billion in 2018. As of now, the company boasts over 300 million active users.
However, like any other business, JD.com has also faced challenges along the way. These include competition from tech giants like Alibaba and Pinduoduo, legal issues, and market fluctuations. But despite the challenges, JD.com continues to grow and innovate, always keeping their customers at the forefront of their business strategy. Their dedication to impeccability, fast delivery, and authenticity continues to set them apart in a fiercely competitive e-commerce landscape.
