Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (NYSE: SID), commonly known as CSN, is one of Latin America's most vertically integrated industrial groups, headquartered in São Paulo, Brazil. Founded in 1941, the company built its foundation around the Presidente Vargas Steelworks in Volta Redonda, one of Brazil's largest steel mills, and has since expanded well beyond steelmaking into mining, cement, logistics, and energy.
CSN operates through five segments. The Steel segment produces flat and long steel products, galvanized steel, and metallic packaging used across the automotive, construction, appliance, and food and chemical packaging industries. The Mining segment centers on iron ore extraction, primarily from the Casa de Pedra mine, along with smaller-scale tin mining, and supplies both CSN's own steel operations and international export markets, especially in Asia and Europe. The Cement segment produces cement and building materials, while Logistics operates railways and port terminals that connect CSN's mining, steel, and cement operations to domestic and export markets. The Energy segment generates electricity, including from hydroelectric plants, largely to support the company's own industrial operations.
This vertical integration, from mining raw iron ore to producing and distributing finished steel, is central to CSN's business model and a key factor in any analysis of the company, since it gives CSN more control over input costs than steelmakers that rely on external iron ore suppliers. At the same time, this means CSN's results are tied to swings in both global iron ore prices and steel demand, which do not always move in the same direction.
Because CSN operates primarily in Brazil, its performance is also closely linked to the Brazilian real's exchange rate, domestic infrastructure and construction activity, and international commodity cycles, particularly demand from China, one of the largest buyers of Brazilian iron ore.
